We have to confess to only having visited New York twice, and – an even bigger confession – we’ve not yet made it to Brooklyn.
However, Rachel Felder’s fascinating fully illustrated Guide has made us determined to get across the pond and explore this lively borough just as soon as possible.
After a brief introduction this Curated Guide is divided into two sections. The first – Things to Do – lists the likes of cultural events, the live music scene, culinary mainstays and flea markets; whilst the second part of the book features the Neighbourhoods themselves along with a map.
We are longing to call in at Greenpoint’s Ovenly to experience its scrummy sounding baked goods – two pieces of shortbread spiked with espresso and shards of caramelized sugar for us please; or to The Farm on Adderley in Ditmas Park for its ‘farm-to-table’ restaurant.
Along with lots of places to eat Rachel has chosen her favourite places for shopping, etc – books and gifts at Marlow Goods in Williamsburg; unusual jewellery at Erie Basin, Red Hook; a tattoo at Saved in Williamsburg; shoes and bags at Zoë in Dumbo; and for something for the children, also in Dumbo, to Half Pint Citizens.
Be warned you might need to take an extra-large suitcase with you to cope with all the purchases, but if you forget it you can buy lightweight wheelie suitcases at Flight 101 Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Cobble Hill.
